Short-form video is one of the most powerful tools in your business arsenal today. If you’re not filming Instagram Reels, Youtube Shorts, or TikToks, you’re missing out on attention, conversions, and leads.
But here’s the truth:
Most short-form content sucks.
And it’s not because the algorithm hates you. It’s because the video is boring, unframed, badly lit, hard to hear, and worst of all…it doesn’t start with a clear, scroll-stopping message.
If you’re a business owner, coach, or personal brand trying to grow with video, and you’ve got something real to say, this post will walk you through exactly how to film engaging short-form videos from your office or even your garage or car …using gear that costs less than dinner at Applebee’s.
This is the same playbook I use as a YouTube consultant helping entrepreneurs and high-performing brands create video systems that scale their influence and sales.
So let’s jump into it.

Set Up Your Vertical Shorts/Reels Station Doesn’t Need to Be Fancy. It Just Needs to Be Intentional.
You don’t need fancy gear to film great Instagram Reels.
You need a tripod, a mic, and some daylight. That’s it.
Here’s your No-Excuses Filming Kit:
- Tripod – The Ulanzi tripod ($25 on Amazon) is perfect. I own three—one upstairs, one downstairs, one in the car.
- Microphone – DJI Mic 2. Clean audio = confident presence. People respect clear sound. (Cheaper version of Mic 2)
- Lighting – Natural window light is ideal. No window? Use an 18″ Neewer Ring Light. Got a little budget? The app-controlled Phylite is next level.
- Chair – A high bar chair or backless chair is a must. You slump in a couch. A stool keeps you alert, alive, and present.
- Magnetic Phone Case – Makes attaching your phone to a tripod way easier. Whether you use iPhone or Android, get one.
Golden Rule: Never sit with the window behind you. That turns your face into a silhouette. Always face your light source. Be the brightest thing in the frame.

How to Frame a Short-Form Video Like a Pro
Now that you have the gear, let’s talk about framing. Framing refers to what appears on the camera phone screen.
So things like – do you sit in the middle or off to the side?
How much room should be above your head?
How much of your “crotch” is on screen? (that’s more serious than you think – so many professional people give me full on “crotch shots” and it’s totally unprofessional).
So let’s talk about where to sit and how to position yourself on camera to make a great first impression with your viewers in the newsfeed.
Frame it correctly.
Follow these simple rules:
Frame Checklist:
- Headroom: Leave about 2 hand widths of space above your head.
- Chest-up framing: Waist or elbows visible, but never your whole body.
- Off-center positioning: Slightly to the left or right. Gives room for on-screen text.
- Cinematic Mode ON: Blur that background if you’re on iPhone. This gives your video a polished, professional look.
Good Frame Sample

And here’s What NOT to Do:
- Don’t film your crotch. Your belt doesn’t even need to be on camera much less the crotchular area. Make sure your “below the belt” area is low on the screen and minimal.
- Don’t film in a wide-angle shot where your whole body is in view. It’s awkward and unnecessary.
- Don’t sit in a chair where your posture collapses.
- Don’t film with clutter or light sources behind you.
Bad Frame Sample

Remember: these Instagram Reels are going on social. They are vertical, fast, and emotionally charged. You are not making a documentary…You need to make them stop the scroll and if your head is too high or you’re too small on the screen, then they will swipe right through your video.
The First 5 Words Are Life or Death (For Your Instagram Reel)
Let me be super clear:
If your first five words don’t land, the rest of your video doesn’t matter.
No “Hey guys, what’s up!”
No “I just wanted to share…”
No “Let me tell you a story…”
Just say something that matters.
Hooks That Stop the Scroll:
- “Your grandkids won’t know you.”
- “God gave you an abundant life…but you’re not living it.”
- “You’re a business owner with zero freedom.”
- “You’re rich, but you’re unhealthy.”
When I work with clients inside our accelerator, we test hooks like this to discover what resonates with their audience.
The key is: Say what the text overlay will say. That way the caption matches your hook, and Instagram/YouTube can match the transcript with the text on screen. YouTube literally reads your lips. Use that.
And whatever you do…don’t wear shirts with big text across your chest. It interferes with captions and makes your visual too noisy.

30-Second Rant Formula: Hook Your Audience and Inspire Immediate Action
After your hook go right into the best part of your content. The best part. The most emotionally resonant piece.
Don’t ease into it. Don’t build up to the big takeaway.
Your viewer doesn’t have time for the setup. You have about 3 seconds to make them feel something and 30 more to get them to take action.
Here’s the structure:
- Hook: Your grandkids won’t remember you.
- Rant: But they’ll remember that you couldn’t get down on the floor with them. That you were always tired. Always sore. Because you sacrificed your health at the altar of hustle. This part should be about 35-45 seconds.
- CTA: That’s why I coach leaders to reclaim their energy and build a legacy that lasts. Link’s in my bio.
That’s it. That’s a Instagram reel. And that’s how you sell with your values…not with hype.

Batch Film Like a Pro: How to Record 5–7 Viral Reels in One Sitting
Stop filming one video at a time.
Film 5–7 Reels in one sitting.
Why? Because momentum matters. When you’re in the zone, filming becomes faster, cleaner, and more authentic.
Batch Filming Strategy:
- Set your frame once and don’t touch it.
- Change your shirt every 1–2 takes if you want variety.
- Keep a note file with your best hooks.
- Aim for 35–45 second takes.
- Improvise. Be human. You’re not auditioning for CNN.
When you start thinking like a content-producing YouTube strategist, you stop overthinking and start shipping.
Why Short-Form Video Is a Trojan Horse for Your Business Strategy
If you’re thinking “but I want to grow on YouTube, not TikTok,” hear me out.
Youtube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikToks are:
- Fast to produce
- Easy to test messaging
- Scalable across platforms
- Ideal for repurposing into long-form content
In our YouTube Business Blueprint, we teach creators how to link short-form videos to long-form videos, playlists (silos), or lead magnets that create real conversion pathways.
Your Youtube Shorts aren’t just marketing…they’re part of a larger system designed to build trust, establish authority, and trigger the algorithm.
TL;DR – Your Checklist for a Scroll-Stopping Reel:
✅ Tripod + bar stool + DJI mic
✅ Cinematic mode ON
✅ Natural light or LED light in front
✅ Framed chest-up, headroom adjusted
✅ Hook = first 5 words = power words
✅ No shirts with text
✅ Speak with conviction
✅ CTA that aligns with your values
